    Position Description

    This is professional and highly responsible work conducting legal research, providing oral and written legal advice, and drafting orders for the assigned circuit judges. The work involves considerable interpretation and judgment in the analysis of legal issues, primarily on criminal postconviction matters. The Staff Attorney may also work on criminal trial and pretrial matters and may also assist with legal issues from other divisions and the Court Counsel. Contacts are primarily with judges, judicial assistants, and other court personnel. All work is performed under the supervision of a Senior Staff Attorney. Up to two days of telework per week may be authorized.

    Education, Experience, Licenses, Certifications, and Registrations

    • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.
    • Members standing in good standing with The Florida Bar. Candidates who are currently pursuing membership are eligible to apply but are required to attain Florida Bar membership within one year of hire.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Review court files, pleadings, motions, memoranda of law, and other documentation and draft orders, memoranda, reports, and other correspondence at the direction of the judges.
    • Review pro se motions for postconviction relief, motions to correct illegal sentences, motions to withdraw plea, motions for DNA testing, etc., and prepare proposed orders for the judges.
    • Research substantive and procedural areas of criminal law, and draft orders on trial motions, including motions to dismiss, to suppress, to admit collateral crime evidence, etc.
    • Attend hearings in court and prepare appropriate orders following the hearings.
    • Perform case management of Death Penalty Cases and track Postconviction Relief Cases.
    • Perform other duties as directed by Court Counsel, Supervising Senior Staff Attorney, and judges.

    • Attend hearings and trials, review electronic case files, evidence, depositions, pleadings, motions, memoranda of law, and other documentation in order to advise judges in a variety of legal areas.
    • Research legal matters, substantive procedural, as directed by judges and draft legal memoranda, judgements, orders, reports, and other correspondence.
    • Work effectively in cooperative atmosphere with judges, attorneys, constitutional officers, and administrative staff functioning within a judicial circuit.
    • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

    The Pasco County Value Adjustment Board (VAB) is seeking Attorney and Appraiser Special Magistrates to serve for the 2016 term. To be chosen, an applicant must meet the criteria of Section 194.035, Florida Statutes. Special Magistrates are paid $125 per hour with a four hour minimum for a mutually scheduled hearing date. All selected Special Magistrates will be required to attend an orientation session on a date to be determined.     Pasco County is growing, and the East side of the County is leading much of that growth.  Recognizing this growth, attorneys in Dade City, Wesley Chapel, and Zephyrhills recently got together to form  the East Pasco Bar Association.  Our mission it to provide an avenue for attorneys to interact with the judiciary and each other and to advocate for our clients, our county and the betterment of the community.  We also hope to enable better communications between attorneys and those who provide services to attorneys to ensure that we can provide the best possible legal services to our clients.  We hope you will get in on the ground floor and join us!
